Arca Swiss is a completely rejuvenated company with a revised product line and no fewer than four new 4x5-in. view cameras. The new ingredient is a London professional photo dealer and importer of specialized low-volume gear that the bigger companies aren't interested in handling. Keith Johnson Photographic Ltd. has taken over worldwide Arca Swiss exports, while manufacture continues as before, by Oschwald in Zurich. In the US. they will continue to be represented by Bogen Photo Corp.

The new Arca Swiss models are called PRO I, PRO II, PRO III and SUPER Pro. Let's start at the top of the new Arca Swiss line and work down:

SUPER PRO has arc-like pivots that provide central tilts in the image plane, with calibrations of +- 40°. The vertical-axis swing gives calibrations of +-45 degrees. In all cases, Arca Swiss tilts and swings are limited only by the bellows, and the camera's from and back standards are identical, except for certain back knobs that have been introduced in size order to accommodate Polaroid 545 and 550 instant-film holders.

The rise-and-fall is calibrated to +-30 mm and lateral cross movements are +- 40 mm. By exploiting this sideways shift the vertical swing axis can be positioned anywhere inside the image plane, while the horizontal axis remains fixed in its central position.

The SUPER PRO has a rotating Graflok-type back that can be stopped and locked in any position, and has a telescoping rail that expands from 400 mm to a theoretical maximum of nearly double this, although only a 600-mm stretch is advised by Keith Johnson.

The Arca Swiss PRO III has combined base and central tilts, but lacks the special image-plane pivots of the SUPER PRO. PRO I and II each offer half of PRO III-PRO II giving only central tilts, PRO I only base tilts. Gymnastic data for this lot is +- 35 degrees of calibrated tilt and swing, front and back, and 40-mm cross-axial shifting, up and down, right and left. These PRO models have Graflok-type nonrotating groundglass backs, and like all Arca Swiss cameras, their rails are calibrated in millimeters.
